San Fabian – 6 February. The Archdiocesan School of San Fabian held a one-day seminar/workshop on basic self-defense. It was participated in by all the female students of the High School Department. The seminar was aptly called: “Know the Law. A Seminar/Workshop on the Laws to Protect Vulnerable Members of the Society and Basic Knowledge of Self-Defense”. It was held at the Parish Center of the Parish of St. Fabian, Pope and Martyr.
Msgr. Oscar V. Cruz, DD, the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Schools, instructed the Directors of the Catholic Schools to conduct the said Seminar/Workshop. “I like the girls to learn self-defense methods. Girls who know self-defense can defend themselves against adults, ” he said. Msgr. Cruz further commented that girls should be taught to be calm, but alert. They should be able to grab anything to stop any possible attack.
The Seminar/Workshop was a response to the instruction of Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, DD. A short program introducing the seminar was held with Mr. Michael E. Albay, a faculty member, opening the day with a prayer. Mrs. Caridad M. Valdez, the Assistant Principal, welcomed the students. The rationale of the seminar was explained by Rev. Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza, the School Director. He told the young students of the need to know their rights and to learn to defend those rights. “It is high time that you have to stand for your rights, and learn to fight for them”, he said.
Mr. Leonardo A. Carrera, the ASSF Principal, then gave a talk on “Campus Security: Legal Dimension”. He also elaborated on the the Republic Act 7610, otherwise known as the “Child Abuse Law”. A third topic was discussed by Mr. Carrera on the “Law on the Violation Against Women and their Children”. He specifically explained to the students what they can do in case there is a violation of their rights.
Mr. Edwin T. Clores, a parent of an ASSF student, then gave in the afternoon a Workshop on “Basic Self-Defense”. He demonstrated to the students how to repel aggression or attack using basic knowledge of Self-Defense. Mr. Edwin T. Clores is a 1st Dan Black Belter, and a former Karate Assistant Instructor of the University of Luzon.
